wiena had her points straight out in her previous post.
why would one take something that is totally out of his/her interest?
like Hubby, he was very interested in Power Engineering but end up in Electronic and Electrical instead. he was very gifted in Business and Commerce but end up in engineering.
for me, i think one should know what is his/her strength, potential and interest before choosing the course to pursue study.
i have met a lot of friends who had made wrong and regretful decision in their lives. they took up the wrong course just because parents asked them to, but end up flunked. i don't think it's right for parents to choose your path of life. i told my mum off once in a while about what i want or need to do in my life. parents can only advise you, but everything is all up to you in the end. it's about listing down your options or choices, and make the right decision for your future. it's like choosing jars of candies but you know you are only allowed to choose one type of candy. obviously, you would choose what you like and love, ain't it right? same goes when it comes to choosing your path especially studies as it is the stepping stone towards building up a life that is only lived once. wrong decision made leads to misery. and a lot of hardships too.
when i was in high school, i never liked biology. i didn't love physics but i sort of like it. some part of it, not all. but i know i was very good in chemistry. i learnt chemistry very fast, more than my own expectation. same goes for english too. and i know i loved mathematics especially additional maths. i love to derive, to solve problems, think out of the box, open many solutions to one problem so that i can choose the best out of all. i was so good in chemistry and additional maths that im confident to choose chemical engineering as my next course.
i applied and i did get what i wanted.
i agreed with wiena when she mentioned that our education system sucks. it really is actually. i did wish that we had more choices to make starting from high school, instead of just giving us options of science or art stream. why not divide each stream into more choices? more specific?
like, whoever wants to take engineering, then they can go to engineering science stream and they only need to learn subjects that are relevant for the course they're going to take in the near future? which means the subjects will include - english, bahasa malaysia, physics, maths and additional maths and chemistry?
for those who are interested for medic, why not put another science stream which include science subjects like biology and chemistry only?
back in high school, i only have very keen interest in a few subjects - english, additional maths, and chemistry. the rest? it's either i hate some of them, or im just not interested at all.
same goes when entering university too. why not start straight into major? why do we have to go through some subjects that are not even related to what's in major course? like in foreign universities, their syllabus are totally different from us. they start from major subjects very relevant to what one student is taking up as his/her course, and the minor subjects are only optional. that way, students can be more sure of what to register for themselves.
i understand that the goverment wants to produce well-rounded citizens. the fact is, none of us are interested in EVERYTHING.
some pretend to be interested. pretend to be a genius.
some need to be interested because of parents' desires.
some need to love the subjects cause if they don't, they're going to flunk and it will affect the cumulative credits for the semester.
and oh, i don't actually understand why some of us want to score on papers instead of want to score in the brains? there's a big difference between those two.
#1. want to score on papers - you score so that others will see you as the smarty-pants, even though you yourself knows that you're just average like others. you have to score so that parents will proud of you, and you can hear them brag about you to other parents. so that you can get better job when you know that as soon as a project is given to you, you practically knows nothing.
#2. want to score in brains - you try hard but not too hard till it eats up your life. you study, but you enjoy your life to the maximum. if you flunked, you just don't care. all you care is to really and fully understand what that had been taught or learnt. you dont care how much cumulative credits you will get on papers, cause you know you have a lot more credits in your head. and you know you understand those things learnt so well, that you have no worries about work.
truth to be told, most of my friends are type #1. this type; they fear failure. they fear shame. they fear almost everything. they just want a happy fairy tale life of being succesful in life. just take a straight road to a wonderful life. how more boring can that be?
me, im the type #2. im not ashamed to admit that i have failed twice when all my classmates passed (not all scored, just pass. note that please) those papers. i still remember the subjects - Chemical Material and Energy Balances and Chemical Process & Dynamic Control. so, i failed. so what? at least, now i can brag that i have these things at the tip of my fingers. thanks to my failure. it didn't kill me off. it pushed me forward.
certificates are just like passports, really. working experience, ethics and attitude are actually the main things needed for a person to be successful career-wise. just look around me here at my workplace. enough for me to say, that they're type #1. how im sure? here's how.
before, there used to be like 5 members in the team for the project im doing now. 3 of them are experienced ones (so as they claimed), and The Boss needed us to draft the material balance calculation for the overall project. how much feed is needed, how much products and by-products we can expect, and bla bla bla. ok, here's the feed properties:
synthethic gas flow : 200 L/hr which is equivalent to 3667 ml/min.
gas supply pressure : 100 bar
operation pressure : 60 bar
one tank of 100 bar of pressured gas in it, with that much of flow, can lasts about 10 days to 2 weeks. that's for sure. but i didn't want to tell cause i know they'll tell me off. of course, who am i compared to 3 experienced geniuses, right?
and so they told me this : "oh so now, we need to use 4-5 tanks of synthetic gas for a 24 hours of operation.." (confidently, they told). "we'll let The Boss know about this."
and so they did. and they get screwed really bad by The Boss.
cause it totally didn't make any sense at all.
and the cost? one tank is about rm2000. according to their calculation, we need 4-5 tanks which will cost us about rm10,000 daily. for 3 months? get a calculator and start calculating.
you see, a person who seems to be playful and not serious (like me!) doesn't mean that he/she is stupid or lack of knowledge. even Einstein was kicked out of school when he was only 7 years old.
nuff said.
ooohh! it's lunch hour already. im freaking hungry. later.
